2021.10.18 22:08 MOGO-Hud Uranium DD: The supply squeeze is coming!
Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong but this DD seems to be pretty on point regarding the imminent rise in uranium demand and prices.
There are currently 442 nuclear reactors operating in 30 countries, the main being: US (95), France (57), China (47), Russia (38), Japan (33). Together these reactors consume around 200 million pounds of uranium per year. Furthermore, there are over 50 reactors under construction and an additional 321 reactors proposed.
The current supply deficit is about 20 million pounds and could reach as much as 50 million pounds as mine production has been suspended due to COVID-19.
Therefore, prices have to rise to at least 50–60 $/lb, or nations like the US, with more than 20% of energy generated by nuclear reactors will leave their population without energy, i.e. California’s recent rolling blackouts.

Do they save the broadcasts online somewhere for a time? Or is there a particular place that tends to have a lot of overlap with what the World Service talks about?

2021.10.18 22:08 axis21_2021 Sharp pain under big toe
Some backstory here. Bought new hiking shoes, and went with them to mountains few times. They were very mobilizing front of foot, my calves felt that. It started as slight feeling of pebble in shoe, could not find one and ignored that. Next trips it was painfully to walk downhill, it was sharp pain under big toe at its base, like stepping on perpendicular knife, trying to cut my big toe at base. I saw that I need to put foot slightly different to avoid that pain, lifting big toe a little. Putting small cloth separator between big toe and next one helped with that., thinking that this is something temporary and I just need to walk that off. At some point it started to be painfully walking on flat surfaces, so I connected dots that walking more might be not fix for that. It is 2 weeks from my last activity, I am fully 'grounded', working from home and avoiding walking at all, but still feels like it gets worse.
Summary of symptoms: - no swelling - no discoloration - no strange/angled toe position - no 'passive' pain, appears only when walking - no pain when moving/hyperextending of big toe without load - attacks on random steps, when placing foot with flat or slightly curled toes, could not reproduce recurrent position to appear it - I can walk lame without pain, by raising big toe or fully putting weight on side of foot - pain is sharp and intense, but not lasting when removed load - pain appears in bottom of big toe like perpendicular line on height between proximal phalanx and metatarsal
Any hopes that this will resolve itself? It would be painfully trip to just walk to examine it (and in my country it will take months with public healthcare to get to specialist, or bags of money)

2021.10.18 22:08 Silverstone673 Vaush's Debate With Ahrelevant
First off I just want to clarify that I don't hate Vaush, and I really enjoy some of his content! That being said, there are two arguments in specific he made in the debate with Ahrelevant that I don't think are sound:
Historically, socialists have been accused of hypocrisy by the right as a means of delegitimizing them: So, I think that if you take this argument on its face, it's probably true. However, it's also important to recognize that the fact that an argument is often made in bad faith does not mean that there are no instances where that argument might be valid. To use an example relevant to Vaush specifically - consider reverse-racism. 99% of the time, reverse-racism is the kind of kneejerk defense white-supremacists use to justify to themselves that they are oppressed. With someone like Professor Flowers though, reverse-racism might actually apply, because of her essentializing of white people as colonizers, who could potentially be forcibly removed from the U.S. without that being morally wrong.
If Vaush was making the same argument he does for Hasan, he might say "Historically, cries of reverse-racism have been used by white supremacists, so we ought not to ever call someone that because it contributes to white supremacist narratives". The fact that he doesn't means that he analyses these situations through different frameworks, and is inconsistent. To be clear, this isn't about the specific language being used. You could say something equivalent about Professor Flowers without saying the exact words 'reverse-racism', and this criticism of Vaush's argument would still hold.
Attributing moral wrongs to someone's knowledge of their actions is purely deontological: At some point, Vaush points this out to Ahrelevant, saying this isn't consistent with utilitarianism. That isn't really true though. In essence what 'knowledge' amounts to here is a question of intentions, and the argument being made is that if you are focusing on someone's intentions, you must be deontological. I think though that there is a utilitarian argument for focusing on intentions, that Vaush has actually expressed before. The idea is that someone performing a bad action unintentionally would not then go on to perform more of those kinds of actions, nor would they encourage said action to be performed in society at large to a huge extent. Someone doing something bad intentionally though, would be cause for more worry because there is a higher chance they'd do that sort of thing again, and encourage others to do it.
Vaush makes a similar argument in This Video, where he says that the same policy, implemented by a socialist or a fascist, should still be thought of differently, because of the context in which they were implemented. The 'context' here has to at least in part depend on the intentions of the people implementing the policy in question.
Now, someone might argue that utilitarianism is not forward-looking and we would only look at the action by itself, but I don't think Vaush would subscribe to that sort of philosophy. There are absolutely forms of utilitarianism that are more holistic, and take into account future actions.
